2.The Download: text-to-video AI, and China’s big methanol bet

What’s happened: Meta has unveiled an AI system that generates short videos based on text prompts. Make-A-Video lets you type in a string of words, like “A dog wearing a superhero outfit with a red cape flying through the sky,” and then generates a five-second clip that, while pretty accurate, has the aesthetics of a trippy old home video. How it works: Meta combined data from three open-source image and video data sets to train its model. Standard text-image data sets of labeled still images helped the AI learn what objects are called and what they look like. And a database […]

3.Artificial Intelligence Will Change Jobs — For the Better

The ramifications of advances in artificial intelligence (A.I.) are being felt further afield than anyone expected. A.I. perhaps entered the public consciousness in the 1990s thanks to chess competitions, but it s now infiltrating art competitions and, soon, the written word. Some commercial offerings can provide paragraphs of text based on brief prompts, keywords, and tone parameters. Users of Google s email service have, of course, been microdosing on A.I. since 2018, when Gmail rolled out Smart Compose. What these developments bring home is that people in the so-called “creative class” are now facing the first-person reckoning that automation has long […]

A Google Stadia video game controller with a Night Blue finish alongside a gaming monitor, taken on … [+] November 27, 2019. (Photo by Olly Curtis/Future Publishing via Getty Images) Future Publishing via Getty Images While it’s a great (and necessary) move that Google has chosen to refund all players hardware and software purchases through Google Stadia ahead of the cloud gaming service shutting down, one thing they do not seem to have considered is the effect it has on developers who, up until this very moment, were still making games for the platform. It sounds like Google did not communicate anything about […]

5.Ubisoft announces game purchase transfers from Google Stadia to PC

Yesterday, Google delivered some jarring news when it announced that it was shutting down Stadia , its cloud game streaming service. While its unfortunate, there is a small silver lining, as Ubisoft has now stepped up to support the transfer of Ubisoft games purchased on Stadia, so they can be played on PC. While Ubisoft doesnt have a timeline of when this option will be available, at least its an […]

6.RCMP s use of facial recognition extends well beyond Clearview AI

OTTAWA — Canada’s national police force, which was heavily criticized for using Clearview AI software, has signed contracts to use multiple facial recognition tools. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) revealed these details in documents recently tabled in Parliament, though it says it has stopped using facial recognition technology pending an internal review sparked by public outcry in 2020. The RCMP has been open about , despite privacy concerns, but it has divulged little about the programs at its disposal. “It’s not a simple matter to determine which police forces are using what surveillance tools and that’s a fundamental flaw of accountability that […]

8.The Callisto Protocol s AI is more interested in scaring you than killing you

The Callisto Protocol gets constantly compared to Dead Space — and it makes sense, really. A lot of the developers are the same, a lot of the core ideas are the same, and it even looks quite similar, really. But this new venture from young developer Striking Distance is doing more with its horror than Dead Space could back in 2008; we’re 14 years down the line, now, and technology has come a long way. Striking Distance really cares a lot about horror. The staff have been ruthless in studying the psychology of fear, and have boiled down the tenets of […]

10.Apple Responds to Video Testing Crash Detection Feature With Junkyard Vehicles

When I contacted Apple with the results, a company spokesman said that the testing conditions in the junkyard didn t provide enough signals to the iPhone to trigger the feature in the stopped cars. It wasn t connected to Bluetooth or CarPlay, which would have indicated the car was in use, and the vehicles might not have traveled enough distance prior to the crash to indicate driving. Had the iPhone received those extra indicatorsand had its GPS shown the cars were on a real roadthe likelihood of an alert would have been greater, he said. Motion sensors: All the devices have […]
