2.Google Meet Adds a Feature to Boost Visibility on Video Meetings
Google Meet ‘s latest feature update is aimed at helping keep all participants in a video conference as visible as possible. The update, called video framing, is activated when a participant first joins. Their video camera will zoom in to focus on their face, cutting out unneeded background visuals and ensuring the user s face will be clear to others on the call. It s an automated process, and it only happens once — so no one will be distracted by a constantly shifting and refocusing camera. Unlike how the Admin-specific feature controls work, any Google Meet users with the video framing tool […]

3.When even Zuckerberg is making fun of iMessage, you know you have a problem
Over the years, Apple has been gaining more and more criticism over iMessage and its lack of interoperability. CEO Tim Cook responded to the criticism by telling users to . Now even Mark Zuckerberg has stepped into the fray to drag Apple about iMessage. In an Instagram post, the Meta CEO shared a photo of an ad for WhatsApp displayed on Pennsylvania Station in New York City. The ad riffs on the old green bubble vs blue bubble argument, urging people to switch to WhatsApp for its end-to-end encryption. However, it’s below the image where Zuckerberg really goes after Apple. In his […]

4.Fossil Gen 6 smartwatches getting Wear OS 3 update, no Assistant
Google Fit also wont be on the Gen 6 after updating to Wear OS 3, although the app is still available. 5.Rent Too Damn High? Blame YieldStar, a Secret Algorithm from Housing Hell
Rents across the country have skyrocketed thanks in part to a rental algorithm called YieldStar that takes the human element out of housing and hikes prices on behalf of landlords — a handy tool for real estate owners and a dystopian and never-ending nightmare for tenants. As , the software touts the fact that rents have shot up over the last year as both a feather in its cap and one of its main selling points. 6.Israel deploys AI powered robot guns that can track targets in the West Bank
Amid increasing tension between Israel and Palestine in the occupied West Bank, Israel’s army has recently introduced artificial intelligence-powered robotic guns. The twin gun turrets are installed on top of a guard tower overlooking the crowded al-Aroub refugee camp in the West Bank. Living under the target-tracking weapon tower is 19-year-old Kamal Abu Hishesh. “It fires by itself without any difficulty from the soldier. When he [an Israeli soldier] sees a little boy, he presses a button or something and it fires by itself,” said the resident of the al-Aroub camp. “Also, it is very fast, even faster than the soldiers… The tear gas […]

7.TikTok is Introducing an Adults Only Content Option
As for when and why streamers might opt to set an age limit, TikTok offered a couple of theoretical examples.“Perhaps a comedy routine is better suited for people over age 18. Or, a host may plan to talk about a difficult life experience and they would feel more comfortable knowing the conversation is limited to adults,” the company wrote in its Monday news release . Those justifications may sound naively chaste, but the move to age-restrict some content on the platform is unlikely to make TikTok the next Only Fans. The platform has a strict ban on most of the content […]

TikTok pitches this as a logical extension of its restrictions on teen content , but it also comes after incidents of abuse. Older viewers have sexually exploited teen hosts, for example, while teens have made threats against schools. In theory, the higher minimum age will reduce the number of school-age kids using Live to get […]

9.Bizarre Halloween Candy Courtesy of AI Tool Dall E: Farte Cats, Anyone?
The DIY art world hasn t been the same since the passing of Bob Ross (rest in peace in a forest of happy little trees, king), but AI art creation tool Dall-E at least offers an entertaining and quicker way to generate masterpieces that seem appropriate for the bizarro timeline we all now share. AI researcher Janelle Shane has made a hobby of prompting machine learning systems to engage in the 2022 equivalent of some very weird improv comedy. Her interactions with AI prompt plenty of hilarity — including a charming set of Valentine s Day cards that almost work. Her […]

10.Why AI shouldn’t be making life and death decisions
Let me introduce you to Philip Nitschke, also known as “Dr. Death” or “the Elon Musk of assisted suicide.” Nitschke has a curious goal: He wants to “demedicalize” death and make assisted suicide as unassisted as possible through technology. As my colleague Will Heaven reports , Nitschke has developed a coffin-size machine called the Sarco. People seeking to end their lives can enter the machine after undergoing an algorithm-based psychiatric self-assessment. If they pass, the Sarco will release nitrogen gas, which asphyxiates them in minutes. A person who has chosen to die must answer three questions: Who are you? Where are […]
